"Curiosity did not kill this cat" -Studs Terkel
I almost wanted to title this blog entry --Studs Terkel a "Real American" but that kind of connotation is not quite right. Somebody like Studs Terkel could only happen in America. A better description would be quintessentially American like Benjamin Franklin or Mark Twain. To me Studs Terkel is a teacher, if your curiosity strikes you and you want to learn more about his life, you will learn something about America also.

1. Mr. Alistair Strongclaws, a Declarationist
((My favorite Moleman.

It has begun again!
October 21, 2008 marks the continuation of John Hodgman's gift of knowledge. Complete world knowledge, that is. In Areas of My Expertise Hodgman revealed the world of the hoboes, including names for 700 hoboes. Now, with his new compendium, More Information Than You Require we learn of the deranged world below our own world of the strange naked-mole-rat-like people known enigmatically as "The Mole-men".
If you'd like to participate, just head over to the official list, pick out a name, and upload it to Flickr. Once it's on Flickr, add it to our official 700 Mole-men Flickr group to get it to show up on this site. Sound easy? It is!
And of course, thanks to John Hodgman for giving us these fake facts. Be sure to pick up a copy of his new book (and the old one too) for your enjoyment and inspiration.

Unlock the potential of your Canon digital Camera: chdk Canon SD1000
(((Use a free firmware update and unlock all kinds of capabilities you probably did not think your Canon point and shoot consumer digital camera was even able to do! This is not endorsed by Canon but if you do not like it simply erase it off your sdcard and your Camera is completely back to normal (crippled?)).
A. After loading of CHDK program you can get the following functionality:
* Shooting in RAW
* Live histogram (RGB, blended, luminance and for each RGB channel)
* Zebra mode (blinking highlights and shadows)
* DOF-calculator
* Battery indicator
* Scripts execution (exposure/focus/... bracketing, intervalometer and more)
* File browser
* Text reader
* Calendar
* Some fun tools and games :)
Q. What camera models are supported by the CHDK program?
A. Currently, the CHDK program is available for Canon digital cameras of the following models:
* A460, Fw: 1.00d
* A550, Fw: 1.00c
* A560, Fw: 1.00a
* A570, Fw: 1.00e, 1.01a
* A610, Fw: 1.00e, 1.00f, (1.00d with CHDK version for 1.00e)
* A620, Fw: 1.00f ( 1.00e is not compatible. You must upgrade to 1.00f first (see here))
* A630, Fw: 1.00c
* A640, Fw: 1.00b
* A650 IS, Fw: 1.00d
* A700, Fw: 1.00b
* A710 IS, Fw: 1.00a
* A720 IS, Fw: 1.00c
* S2 IS, Fw: 1.00e, 1.00f, 1.00g, (1.00i with CHDK version for 1.00g)
* S3 IS, Fw: 1.00a
* G7, Fw: 1.00e, 1.00g, 1.00i, 1.00j
* SD450 (IXUS55), Fw: 1.00b, 1.00c
* SD500 (IXUS700), Fw: 1.01a, 1.01b
* SD700 (IXUS800), Fw: 1.00b, 1.01b
* SD800 (IXUS850), Fw: 1.00e
* SD850 (IXUS950), Fw: 1.00c
* SD1000 (IXUS70), Fw: 1.01b, 1.02a
In theory it can be modified to support any camera based on the DIGIC II or DIGIC III platform. (How do you do this?). See Firmware Comparisons to identify which build will work for you.

New Five Dollar Bill Enters Circulation Today
Every person or business that gets a counterfeit bill experiences a real economic loss, and in 2007, $61.4 million in counterfeit money was passed in the United States. "Everyone who uses U.S. currency is on the front line of defense against counterfeiters," said Michael Merritt, Deputy Assistant Director, U.S. Secret Service. "The best way to protect yourself is to learn the security features. It’s simple, it’s quick, and it can save you from accepting a fake."

hulu.com Video on Demand Launches Tomorrow
Hulu launches Tomorrow
I got my private beta invite in January and so far have watched 49 shows on here. It was cool to watch as they kept adding more networks and content, there is no question this site is going to be a big hit. One piece of advice is to use firefox and get ad block plus then you don't have to watch the short commercials, man I hate commercials! TV on the internet seems like it is becoming more mainstream and I don't think it will stop anytime soon.
The good thing about this is that once the genie is out of the bottle there is not much that corporations can do to try to control how people view the content they make available. This site http://www.openhulu.com/ has already mirrored the content from Hulu so people without a invite have had access to it.
from wikipedia: Hulu allows users to embed their videos on external sites. A user in the private beta decided to scrape all of their videos and make a public site called OPENhulu.
There was no response from Hulu as to the legality of this, but many blogs covered the issue creating quite an uproar in the online video scene.

Ted Prize website launched Today.
The Ted Prize website http://www.tedprize.org was Launched today. I watched this as it was announced on the live webcast. During the webcast Chris Anderson kept saying "thousands watching Live " I was wondering if the numbers will be actually be higher than this?
Anyhow here are some screengrabs from the webcast, I will post a link when these videos make it onto the main TED.com website. I took away something from every talk, and I think the tedprize.org site will be a great success. It seems that there are loads of great people who have been posting comments on the TED website and it will be no surprizs if the same thing happens on the new one, what a great way to get involved.
Here is a good resource to watch the TED coverage as it unfolds:
Who's blogging TED2008 and TED@Aspen?
Stop motion video of travel montage, half way across the U.S. in 30 seconds!
This is a old video but one of my favorites I've made, I thought I would post it one here just for easy access to the links.
There is a much higher quility 16mb video of the same thing here: http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewshow.html?fl=2577958&alb=0
you have to d/l the photodex viewer but that is quick and easy, the difference of picture and sound quality is quite amazing, it is a good way to compare the quality of youtube videos to something that is actually not that much larger of file size. I think I might upload the same video to some of my other favorite video sharing sites because I have noticed that there are many that have much better quality/capabilities than youtube. One of my new favorites is viddler.com because I like the way it seems more social because of the capability to post comments/tags at a certain time in the video.
Ok now on vimeo, with links to the photos on my flickr stream.

Calling up bloggers up with GrandCentral
Now if you like you can leave me a voicemail for free from anywhere.
The Grand Central capabilities are more than just voice mail but I do not want to link this blog to my home phone, just like most people who will leave messages have the option of keeping their calling number private. I'm sure it will come in handy to use more capabilities of this interesting service. For right now if you would like to test it out leave some feedback or comment about my blog, tell me what you think.

How-to: Asus Eee Pc with touch screen
Was Looking into the Asus eeepc and watched this on youtube and thought it was pretty awesome. The addition of the touchscreen makes eeepc more compareable to the Kohjinsha SA5SX04ATW which does cost more and is not as readily available/or popular
in the U.S.
Check out this side by side and see how much brighter the screen on the Kohijinsha is.
Kohjinsha adds an Optical Drive to its tiny UMPC
yeah this one is pretty neat also, competition is the best thing for the sub notebook macbook air which seems overpriced for what you get.

Flickr Resistance Against Microsoft Takeover
I still don't understand why flickr charges for pro accounts, they do earn money from our images on yahoo image search which has ads. I would rather see ads than pay $24 because then you don't feel so locked into one service. I know nothing in life is free but don't tell me flickr is not profitable, flickr basically sold us out when yahoo bought them. How much money did these people make? IT was a community that many people spent many hours giving it the value it had when they were able to sell it for a profit to yahoo.

There are some really profound ideas to think about and act upon in this. Like: Credit is a human right, Arguments are just a way for people to use their intellectual capacity to out do one another, Seeing is believing, Humans thrive on challenges, Charity takes away initiative and dignity, Poverty will be a thing of the past.

Photogamer, online social interactive photo sharing game.
In January every day there was a new challenge, for example if the challenge was doorway you take a photo of a doorway... and so on
I had a lot of fun participating and trying to think up creative photos to share. It was also very interesting to get view all the photos and see into other peoples lives as they shared photos from many different places. I got a late start, and I chose not to do challenges from previous days it was fun to just jump in and keep current.
