Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog resident of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, USA. On February 2 (Groundhog Day) of each year, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the beloved groundhog with a festive atmosphere of music and food. During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, Phil emerges from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area about 2 mi (3.2 km) east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, the United States will have six more weeks of winter. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring will arrive early.[1] The date of Phil's prognostication is known as Groundhog Day in the United States and Canada. During the rest of the year, Phil lives in the town library with his "wife" Phyllis. A select group, called the Inner Circle, takes care of Phil year-round and also plans the annual ceremony. Members of the Inner Circle are recognizable by their top hats and tuxedos. Phil currently has two co-handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths.[2]

BOB'S BURGERS is a new animated series about a man, his family and a burger joint.

A third-generation restaurateur, BOB BELCHER (H. Jon Benjamin, FAMILY GUY, "Archer") runs Bob's Burgers with the help of his wife and their three kids. Bob has big ideas about burgers, condiments and sides, but only a few thoughts on customer service and business management. Despite his greasy counters, lousy location and occasionally spotty service, Bob is convinced his burgers speak for themselves.

Even though business is slow, Bob gets to work with his family. His wife, LINDA BELCHER (John Roberts, "The Christmas Tree," "Jackie & Debra"), supports Bob's dream through thick and thin (but truth be told, she's getting a little sick of the thin). Their eldest daughter, TINA (Dan Mintz, "Important Things with Demetri Martin," "The Andy Milonakis Show"), is a 13-year-old hopeless romantic with minimal social skills. Middle child GENE (Eugene Mirman, "Flight of the Conchords," "Aqua Teen Hunger Force") is an aspiring musician and a prankster who serves up more jokes than burgers. Their youngest, LOUISE (Kristen Schaal, "Flight of the Conchords," "Modern Family"), is the most enthusiastic about her dad's business, but an off-balance sense of humor and her elevated energy level make her somewhat of a liability in the kitchen.

Beyond the restaurant is a city rich with character. Next door to Bob's is It's Your Funeral Home and Crematorium; down the street is Wonder Wharf, the oceanside amusement pier; and a few blocks away is Wagstaff Middle School, where Bob and Linda's kids go to school. And across the street is Jimmy Pesto's Pizzeria, Bob's Burgers' main competition and the thorn in Bob's side.

BOB'S BURGERS is a 20th Century Fox Television production. The series was created by Loren Bouchard ("Home Movies," "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist"). Bouchard and Jim Dauterive ("King of the Hill") serve as executive producers and writers. Anthony Chun ("King of the Hill," "The Goode Family") directed the pilot.

Omaha, NE - A day care bus drops off a seven and three-year-old at 60th and Manderson Streets, but the kids can't find their way to their new foster home.

That's because the home is 28 blocks away.

Police reports show a neighbor called police after she spotted the girl and her younger brother standing outdoors for several minutes. A white van had dropped them off. She invited the children inside to keep them warm.

The older child told police "they were supposed to go to their new foster home but did not know where that was." According to the police report, the address was about 28 blocks away.

Police are investigating whether child neglect is involved.

Update:

Daycare provider De'Borah Willaims says it was a delivery mix up that had two foster children out in the cold until a stranger came along. Williams says she took a three-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl from her daycare and dropped the children off near 60th and Manderson Street. Williams thought it was their new foster home.

The kids waited outside in the cold for several minutes until Michelle Fuller came along and took them into her parents home. She then called police. "Well I just did what anyone would do," said Fuller

Williams realized her mistake when she got a call from the childrens' foster mom. She turned back around to get the kids. Police had already picked them up. The kids are now with their foster parents.

On Thursday, Williams returned to the place she made the mistake to thank Fuller for making sure the children were taken care of. "It was an honest mistake and I'm just glad you took them to safety and you are an angel to me," said Williams.

Google announced a dozen things yesterday, but one of those announcements was on real time search in the search results. Google teamed up with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca to make these real time search results possible.

In short, Google sticks another "universal result" in the search results when they feel a real time result makes sense. For example, a search for popeye, which is currently trending due to the Google Doodle Popeye logo, shows this real time result

Nine Inch Nails fans now have an opportunity to own their very own piece of the band – so to speak. Having confirmed that its touring days are over, the industrial-metal pioneers are auctioning off the bulk of its gear on eBay.

"We've been going through the NIN touring and studio rigs and getting rid of a large selection of gear and equipment the band is no longer in need of," reads a statement on the band’s website (http://www.nin.com/). "We do not know which (if any) tour these items are from unless specified, nor can we get any items autographed, so please do not ask."

As of this writing, 20 items have been listed thus far, among them a 1960 Gibson Les Paul, a 1980 Gibson E-2 Explorer, and a Gibson Banjitar. Bids are arriving fast and furious, with “view counters” approaching 10,000 for most of the items. The band promises that “hundreds of items” will ultimately be listed.

Earlier this year, NIN leader Trent Reznor announced that the group would henceforth forego live performance in order to focus on studio work. The band then proceeded to stage its “last ever” world tour. In the wake of its “retirement,” however, Nine Inch Nails has maintained an extensive interactive relationship with its fans.

This is pretty awesome. I use Groowe search tool bar and Search preview 4.0 add-on for firefox. I like that google is now adding these kinds of helpful search features. I would like to see the "page images" and "page preview" kind of functionality integrated like the "search settings" on google so you do not have to click on it for every search.
Would anyone like to share a thought about this?

Marge Simpson has done something that Homer might not like but will make Bart the proudest kid in his school: She's posed for Playboy magazine.

After more than a half century featuring women like Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford and the Girls of Hooters on its cover, Playboy has for the first time given the spot to a cartoon character.

And the magazine is giving the star of "The Simpsons" the star treatment, complete with a data sheet, an interview and a 2-page centerfold.

The magazine's editorial director, James Jellinek, won't say exactly how much of Marge will show in the November edition that hits newsstands on Oct. 16 — or whether she lets that big pile of blue hair down. But, he said, "It's very, very racy."

But he stressed that the mother of three — the youngest a baby, by the way — has a lot to be proud of.

"She is a stunning example of the cartoon form," he said on Friday at the magazine's headquarters in Chicago, appearing both pleased and surprised at the words coming out of his mouth.

For Playboy, which has seen its circulation slip from 3.15 million to 2.6 million since 2006, putting Marge on the cover was designed to attract younger readers to a magazine where the median age of readers is 35, while not alienating older readers.

"We knew that this would really appeal to the 20-something crowd," said Playboy spokeswoman Theresa Hennessey.

The magazine also hopes to turn the November issue into a collectors' item by featuring Marge, sitting on a chair in the shape of the iconic Playboy bunny, on the cover of only the magazines sold in newsstands. Subscribers get a more traditional model on the cover.

"It's so rare in today's digital age where you have the opportunity to send people to the newsstand to pick something up," Jellinek said.

Playboy even convinced 7-Eleven to carry the magazine in its 1,200 corporate-owned stores, something the company has only done once before in more than 20 years.

"We love Marge," said 7-Eleven spokesman Margaret Chabris.

For those who do collect the magazine — and they're out there — the cover will bring to mind another first for the magazine that occurred in 1971 when a black woman appeared on the cover in exactly the same pose and, like Marge, smiling under an impressive head of hair.

"We knew it was something all of our readers would get a kick out of," said Hennessey.

Jellinek said putting Marge on the cover, while unusual, made perfect sense. For one thing, the cover celebrates the 20th anniversary of the TV show. Further, he said there was an episode in which "Marge bears all," which suggested the at she, or at least the people who drew her, would be comfortable with the Playboy treatment.

Perhaps most important, the idea seemed like a good one to the magazine's founder, Hugh Hefner.

"He's a huge 'Simpsons' fan,' said Jellinek. "He's been on 'The Simpsons.'"

The National Debt Clock is a billboard-sized running total dot-matrix display which constantly updates to show the current United States public debt and each American family's share of it. It is currently installed on Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan, New York City.

The idea for the clock came from New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, who wanted to highlight the rising national debt. In 1989, he sponsored the installation of the first clock, which was erected on 42nd Street close to Times Square. At the time, the national debt remained under $3 trillion but was rising. The clock was temporarily switched off from 2000 to 2002 due to the debt actually falling during that period.

In 2004, the original clock was dismantled and replaced by the current clock at the new location one block away. In 2008, the U.S. national debt exceeded $10 trillion for the first time, leading to press reports that the clock had run out of digits. Plans for an upgrade adding to the existing digits have been announced for 2009.

The original clock outlived Seymour who died in 1995, with Seymour's son Douglas taking over responsibility for the clock through the Durst Organization. As of September 2009, Douglas Durst's cousin Jonathan "Jody" Durst, with whom he currently shares a co-presidency of the company, is in the process of taking over the day-to-day operations as president. In an interview with The New York Times, Jonathan Durst has said that maintenance of the clock is planned "for years to come."[1]

History

Invented and sponsored by New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, the National Debt Clock was installed in 1989.[2] After Seymour's death in 1995, his son Douglas Durst became president of the Durst Organization which owns and maintains the clock.[3][4][5]

According to Douglas Durst, his father had been toying with the basic idea of drawing attention to the growing national debt since at least 1980, when during the holiday season he sent cards that said "Happy New Year. Your share of the national debt is $35,000" to senators and congressmen.[6] In the early eighties, when Durst first developed the idea of a constantly updated clock, the technology required to implement the project was not yet available.[7]

Douglas Durst has been quoted as saying that the clock is a non-partisan effort; he has further explained the motivation behind the project in terms of intergenerational equity: "We're a family business. We think generationally, and we don't want to see the next generation crippled by this burden."[7]

With the national debt at 2.7 trillion dollars, the original 11 by 26 feet (3.4 m × 7.9 m) clock was constructed in 1989 at a cost of $100,000.[3] It was erected at Sixth Avenue, a block from Times Square, located on the north side of 42nd Street, easily visible from Bryant Park. Built by the New York sign company Artkraft Strauss, the clock featured a dot-matrix display with the then-typical character resolution of 5x7. Similar to the second clock, the updating mechanism was such that the display was set to the estimated speed of debt growth and adjusted weekly according to the latest numbers published by the United States Treasury.[9][3][5] Up until the week before his death, Seymour Durst himself adjusted the tally via modem.[3] Since his passing, Artkraft Strauss has been keeping the figures current.[3]

In 2000, due to an improving debt situation, the clock started to run backwards.[4] With the original purpose of the clock being to highlight the rising debt and the reverse giving a mixed message, and with the display not being designed to properly run backwards,[7] the clock was unplugged and covered with a red, white and blue curtain in September 2000, with the national debt standing at roughly 5.7 trillion dollars.[5] The clock was not dismantled however, and in July 2002 the curtain was raised and the clock once again picked up tracking a rising debt, starting at 6.1 trillion dollars.[10]

In 2004, the original clock was unmounted from its location at 42nd Street; the building has since made way for One Bryant Park. An updated model, which could run backwards, was installed one block away on a Durst building at 1133 Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue).[11][7] It is mounted on the side wall of the Building which faces W 44th street. The new clock is outfitted with a dot-matrix display of higher resolution than its predecessor, the numbers thereby more closely emulating the customary seven-segment numeral patterns.

In the midst of extensive media attention devoted to the financial crisis of 2007–2008, some news reports again turned to the National Debt Clock as a symbol and metaphor, particularly highlighting the fact that the clock ran out of digits when the gross federal debt rose above $10 trillion on September 30, 2008.[12][13][14]

An overhaul or complete replacement adding two more digits to the clock's display is currently in the planning for 2009.[9][15][16]

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data. Originally, barcodes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies. They also come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes or symbologies. Although 2D systems use symbols other than bars, they are generally referred to as barcodes as well.

The first use of barcodes was to label railroad cars, but they were not commercially successful until they were used to automate supermarket checkout systems, a task in which they have become almost universal. Their use has spread to many other roles as well, tasks that are generically referred to as Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC). Other systems are attempting to make inroads in the AIDC market, but the simplicity, universality and low cost of barcodes has limited the role of these other systems. It costs about half a United States cent (US$0.005) to implement a barcode while passive RFID still costs about $0.07 to $0.30 per tag.[1]

Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers, or scanned from an image by special software. Scanning software for 2D codes is built-in to or available for many mobile phones, and is especially popular in Japan, India, and Europe.

Lester William Polsfuss, known as Les Paul (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009) [3][4]was an American innovator, inventor, musician and songwriter. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible".[5] He is credited with many recording innovations, including overdubbing (also known as sound on sound),[6] delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording.[7]

His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many of the guitarists of the present day.[8][9][10][11] He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s and they sold millions of records.

Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[12] He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee" along with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed.[13]

The Tata Nano is a city car — rear-engined, four-passenger car aimed primarily at the Indian market — first presented by India's Tata Motors at the 9th annual Auto Expo on January 10, 2008, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India.[4]

Tata targets the vehicle as the least expensive production car in the world[5] — aiming for a starting price of Rs.100,000 (approximately US$2,000).[6][7]. On February 26, 2009, Tata Motors announced that the commercial launch of Tata Nano will be on March 23, 2009.[8]

The news magazine Newsweek identifies the Nano as a part of a "new breed of 21st-century cars" that embody "a contrarian philosophy of smaller, lighter, cheaper" and portend a new era in inexpensive personal transportation — and potentially, "global gridlock" [9]. The Wall Street Journal confirms a global trend toward small cars, which includes the Nano.[10]

The prefix "nano-" derives from the Greek root 'nanos', meaning dwarf. "Nano" also means "small" in Gujarati, the native language of the Tata family,[11] founders of the Tata Group.

Overview
The introduction of the Nano received media attention due to its targeted low price. The car is expected to boost the Indian Economy, create entrepreneurial-opportunities across India[12][13], as well as expand the Indian car market by 65%[14]. The car was envisioned by, Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, who has described it as an eco-friendly "people's car". Nano has been greatly appreciated by many sources and the media for its low-cost[15][16] and eco-friendly initiatives which include using compressed-air as fuel[17] and an electric-version (E-Nano)[18][19]. Tata Group is expected to mass-manufacture the Nano, particularly the electric-version, and, besides selling them in India, to also export them worldwide[20][21][22].

The car was scheduled to release in "B" Segments cities first, followed by other cities.

Critics of the car have questioned its safety in India (where reportedly 90,000 people are killed in road-accidents every year[23]), and have also criticised the pollution that it would cause[24] (including criticism by Nobel Peace Prize-winning scientist, Rajendra Pachauri[25]). However, Tata Motors has promised that it would definitely release Nano's eco-friendly models alongside the gasoline-model[26][27].

Due to opposition to Tata's Singur car-factory by Mamta Banerjee, Tata Motors decided to cease operations in Singur on 2 October 2008 and started manufacturing Tata Nano at its Pantnagar plant. On her protests and the consequent pullout, the media heavily criticised her and The Telegraph even said[28]: "India is being raped by those who profess to be her soldiers, the guardians of peace." Financial Times reported[29]: "If ever there were a symbol of India’s ambitions to become a modern nation, it would surely be the Nano, the tiny car with the even tinier price-tag. A triumph of homegrown engineering, the $2,200 (€1,490, £1,186) Nano encapsulates the dream of millions of Indians groping for a shot at urban prosperity. That process has stalled...No big economy has prospered without undergoing a huge, often brutal, shift of labour from the countryside to cities and from farms to factories...There is a yawning gap with China. India’s information technology and service sector, no matter how dynamic, simply cannot absorb enough labour. To truly shine, India will need millions, perhaps tens of millions, more manufacturing jobs. Why has it not created them?"

Currently, Tata Motors is reportedly manufacturing Nano at its existing Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) plant and a mother plant has been proposed for Sanand Gujarat.[2]

The Smile Train is an international charity helping children with cleft lips and palates, founded in 2000 by Brian Mullaney and Charles Wang.

According to a March 2008 New York Times Magazine article, "over the last eight years, Smile Train has performed more than 280,000 cleft surgeries in 74 of the world’s poorest countries, raising some $84 million last year while employing a worldwide staff of just 30 people."
The Smile Train uses technology such as surgery-training software and grading of operations via digital imaging to make it "one of most productive charities, dollar for deed, in the world." Mullaney, who sits on the board of directors of Presstek (a manufacturer and marketer of high-tech digital imaging solutions), has suggested that "Smile Train is close to reaching a historic break-even point: it will perform more operations each year than the number of children born each year in developing countries with cleft deformities."

Overview:

The film sheds light on the global problem of cleft lip and cleft palate. According to Smile Train, more than 4.7 million children in developing countries suffer with unrepaired clefts. Each child could be saved, just like Pinki, with a simple surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes and costs as little as $250.

Over the past 10 years, Smile Train has provided free cleft surgery for hundreds of thousands of children who would otherwise never have received it. The organization is the world’s leading cleft charity with thousands of partners and programs in 76 of the world’s poorest countries.

Yes this is big news because it is Flickr, other than that the ability to add video to the internet should not be news at all. There is nothing remarkable about being able to add 90 seconds(maximum length) 150 mb (max file size) videos online. As Seth Godin would say, I don't have a video problem. It is my feeling that when companies restrict the way people use the tools they offer, people simply find better tools. One word vimeo.com this is how video sharing should be done, it just seems to me that flickr is trying to stick their toes in to test the water on this one. I also kinda get the feeling that the ability to add video has something to do with the fact that they also just increased the max photo file size for pro(paying) users from 10mb to 20mb. Are they just offering video because they have new excess bandwidth and storage capabilities? Whatever the reason, this just feels kinda half ass IMHO.

Hulu launches Tomorrow
I got my private beta invite in January and so far have watched 49 shows on here. It was cool to watch as they kept adding more networks and content, there is no question this site is going to be a big hit. One piece of advice is to use firefox and get ad block plus then you don't have to watch the short commercials, man I hate commercials! TV on the internet seems like it is becoming more mainstream and I don't think it will stop anytime soon.
The good thing about this is that once the genie is out of the bottle there is not much that corporations can do to try to control how people view the content they make available. This site http://www.openhulu.com/ has already mirrored the content from Hulu so people without a invite have had access to it.

from wikipedia: Hulu allows users to embed their videos on external sites. A user in the private beta decided to scrape all of their videos and make a public site called OPENhulu.

There was no response from Hulu as to the legality of this, but many blogs covered the issue creating quite an uproar in the online video scene.

If you've never used a touch-screen digital camera before, it's definitely a different sort of experience than your typical digital camera. The 7.2 megapixel Samsung L74W offers a 3 inch touch sensitive panel with which to change the shooting settings. The only "real" buttons used during image capture are the shutter release and zoom control (for the 3.6x optical zoom).

The Ted Prize website http://www.tedprize.org was Launched today. I watched this as it was announced on the live webcast. During the webcast Chris Anderson kept saying "thousands watching Live " I was wondering if the numbers will be actually be higher than this?

I took away something from every talk, and I think the tedprize.org site will be a great success. you have to d/l the photodex viewer but that is quick and easy, the difference of picture and sound quality is quite amazing, it is a good way to compare the quality of youtube videos to something that is actually not that much larger of file size. I think I might upload the same video to some of my other favorite video sharing sites because I have noticed that there are many that have much better quality/capabilities than youtube. One of my new favorites is viddler.com because I like the way it seems more social because of the capability to post comments/tags at a certain time in the video.

Was Looking into the Asus eeepc and watched this on youtube and thought it was pretty awesome. The addition of the touchscreen makes eeepc more compareable to the Kohjinsha SA5SX04ATW which does cost more and is not as readily available/or popular
in the U.S.

I still don't understand why flickr charges for pro accounts, they do earn money from our images on yahoo image search which has ads. I would rather see ads than pay $24 because then you don't feel so locked into one service. I know nothing in life is free but don't tell me flickr is not profitable, flickr basically sold us out when yahoo bought them. How much money did these people make? IT was a community that many people spent many hours giving it the value it had when they were able to sell it for a profit to yahoo.
